GEX misconceptions

The most consequential mistakes happen when a descriptive metric becomes a claim about what must happen next. Use these checks when reviewing a chart or explaining a setup.

A label is not an order

“Call resistance must reject”

A call-heavy concentration can slow a rise, be crossed, or coincide with accelerating price. Customer positioning, hedging assumptions, and incoming flow determine which mechanism is plausible.

“Put support must bounce”

A put-heavy level is also compatible with continued selling. The word support names a structural reference; it provides no floor under the underlying or under an option position.

Observe whether price is rejected, accepted, or moves through the area with little interruption. A level can be useful even when it does not reverse the market.

Regime and direction answer different questions

Positive gamma is not a long signal. An assumed long-gamma hedge can resist both upward and downward moves. Negative gamma is not a short signal. An assumed short-gamma hedge can amplify a rally as well as a decline.

A crossing of HVL is not proof of a new trend. Read the transition band, profile quality, the speed of the move, and the selected expiration. A brief cross and sustained trading beyond a zone are different observations.

Scope mistakes change the whole interpretation

There is no universal “the GEX.” The nearest weekly, a particular monthly, and a cumulative profile can show different structures. State the dates and method before comparing them. A chart’s candle interval does not change the selected option chain.

The largest wall is not automatically the session’s most relevant level. Consider proximity, the expected range, nearby concentrations, and what is actually visible in the raw distribution. A large distant position can be background context.

A messy profile does not need to be decoded into a trade. Alternating peaks or conflicting boundaries can make the model less informative. An unclear read is a valid analytical result.

Data quantity does not establish intent

OI is not a count of bullish or bearish bets. Each outstanding contract has a buyer and seller. Call volume is not call buying. Volume includes opening, closing, rolling, and spread activity; unsigned totals do not identify who initiated the risk.

Volume-based gamma is not a new position ledger. A contract may trade several times during a session. Replacing OI with volume changes the measurement; it does not recover the positions still open.

Several labels are not several independent confirmations. Net GEX, Abs GEX, and OI often share inputs. Confluence prioritizes a location; it does not calculate a probability of success.

Structure does not override events

An earnings surprise or macro release can gap price through several levels before the next analytics snapshot. A clean pre-event profile is not a guarantee that post-event positioning or liquidity will be similar.

A high IVR or extreme skew is also not a reversal signal. An unusual reading may persist or become more extreme. Evaluate the event, the option structure, and its risk separately from the descriptive metric.

A quick correction exercise

Instead of “C1 will hold”

Write: “C1 is the largest ranked call-side wall in this selected profile. I will observe price near it, compare OI and volume, and reconsider the range scenario if price is accepted above it.” The second statement records a testable observation without assigning certainty.
